Eye Was Just Thinkin'...

Eye get annoyed reading some blogs or listening to someone speak when every sentence starts with the word eye. (Disclaimer: This excludes my favorites - you know who you are!) Eye mean, there are times, when sharing something about your personal life, when it is absolutely necessary to use THAT word. No problem as long as the topic isn't ALWAYS focused on self. It's also okay if you're discussing an opinion & in reply say "eye agree" or "eye disagree". The worst IMHO is the self appointed expert who pompously beats everyone over the head with "eye recommend" - over & over (unless it's an informational / teaching / mentoring blog). Maybe pose the recommendation(s) as a question - "Have you ever tried ____?" Hellooooooo engage the reader / listener. One-sided dialogue sucks!

How 'bout that person determined to make an impression with - eye bought, eye own, eye have, eye like, eye am so popular eye can't get enough of myself. Eye get so many wonderful emails from my throng of fans. Eye get so many checks in the mail. Eye had such a tough day with the Bentley being in the shop & the maid calling in sick. (Hint: This is what's known as bragging. It's boring - not impressive, enlightening or entertaining.) Want to mention a cool review or terrific news - GREAT - but don't take it to nauseating lengths. Just kinda makes everyone's EYES glaze over anyway.

Eye also despise when folks jump into a discussion on a specific blog / chat / conversation topic & try hijacking it to shamelessly promote themselves & their work, without at least a disguised attempt at providing topic-related input. Eye think that's rude. It's okay to say "eye tried it this way" or "eye had some success with _____ "  or "eye had something similar happen to me" if it pertains to the subject .... but then ... zip it.

Eye don't know. Eye guess eye have little tolerance for the self absorbed.

"See" y'all. Eye gotta go now.

Oh, dear! Eye think eye've fallen into the trap of using 'eye' a few too many times myself! Guess eye'll have to do something about that. Thanks for the reminder!

Dave, eye was almost frightened to leave a comment here for fear of using that eye word.

This reminds me of that country song, where he says he's tired of hearing about her all the time and every once in awhile he wants to about himself.

Although eye'll admit to feeling that blogs can sometimes be a bit self indulgent (my own included) eye kind of expect that when eye stop by to visit, eye am looking to see what's going on in their lives. Eye have less tolerence for the people in my life who only call me up to be a sounding board, to tell me every little detail about their day out at the mall and what their diet consisted of for the week.

Eye pride myself in being a listener. People want to be heard.

Although we are the most important person in out own lives, we need to step back and realize that we're not the most imortant person in everyone else's life..

Carol - Everyone uses (& over-uses) "eye" from time to time - it's part of putting your personality 'out there' or sharing about a situation or a success or a method or problem. It's the steady use of "eye" in every conversation (or post) from some folks that makes me nuts. There's a recent post written by one of our mutual friends describing how they're trying to cope with a sad situation & the use of "eye" is totally appropriate - because it is about something so personal. No worries - my 'regulars' are not prone to suffering from the "eye" malady.

Laura - Geez, hope I didn't sound too grouchy! Just venting a bit. Planning to do a post about listening in the next day or so. Self indulgence is okay in controlled doses. As for being a "sounding board" - EYE compare that to a homeowner helplessly watching as people walk their dogs on said homeowner's lawn. (You can allow the images to develop from there.) Hint: NO ONE walks their dog on my lawn - they cross to the other side when they get to my house. Totally True. Stay tuned so you can "ear" what eye have to say about listening!

BTW Laura - The song you refer to is "Wanna Talk About Me" by Toby Keith. We've been to several of his shows - awesome.

Hey Dave,
Thanks for stoppin by my blog. So sorry to read about your cat, sounds like he was the perfect pet. God's peace to you both.

Now as for the Eye situation- first thing that came to mind for me was "someone's gonna put an eye out if you don't stop messing around" :-)

Venting is good. And YOU just reminded moi of that. For instance, (totally unrelated topic) don't you hate it when you want something specific and go to every store in town, and that means EVERY store and never find what YOU're looking for?

Notice eye didn't use eye once in the above para?

Eye feel good, dadadada, like a eye should dadadada...

Hey Cheryl - Yeah it was rough. He seemed perfectly healthy. How's your book doing?

Joylene - Venting is good. 'Shopping' is unrelated to the post but EYE know you included that comment with an evil grin. EYE rarely shop - EYE'M going home for 5 days & EYE'M feelin' Good. EYE appreciate you stopping by, or would that be BUY.

I use "I" a lot on my writing blog. My intention is to present it as, "Here's what works for me; maybe it'll be helpful for you, too!" rather than "YOU should do this, YOU should do that, here's how YOU should feel." I hope it comes across that way. In fact, I did a recent post full of "you" and changed it to "I" so people wouldn't think I was bossing them around! ;-)

But man, Eye am so distressed because MEye Bentley has a scratch!

Jenn - Your blog is always full of great insights & useful advice. YOU have to use I to get the points across. Your posts are never self indulgent. How's THE SECRET YEAR doing?

Thanks!
I don't have hard numbers on TSY yet. I'm just doing my author events and working on my next book, and dealing with the stuff I can control. :-)

Did Deb take that picture of your big Eye? Eye like it.
You had M-eye curiosity up, had me checking my blog for eyes, wondering if eye could pass the eye test? EYE FAILED!
"Well, Eye Never!", my grandmother used to say. Guess eye should have listened.
